The National Council of Jewellery Valuers was established in 1984 to promote and maintain the highest professional standards for jewellery valuation in Australia.

Members of the NCJV must undergo accredited training in all the key areas of gemmological study, gemstone grading and the detection of synthetic gemstones.

They must also commit to ongoing education to keep up-to-date with industry changes in order to maintain their membership as an accredited valuer.

Accurate jewellery valuation is a demanding and highly technical profession that draws on many areas of expertise and knowledge.

NCJV registered valuers use the latest testing equipment and procedures to provide a scientific analysis of precious and semi-precious gems. They are trained to identify the tiniest details that can affect a valuation and are familiar with the techniques used in the manufacture of imported and modern jewellery, and the creation of antique pieces.

Importantly, their ongoing training means they are kept up-to-date with market trends which can affect price.

Regular market research is undertaken by the NCJV, which is a vital source of information for members on the latest materials and resources.

Through the NCJV, members also have access to a network of other experts for technical advice, resources and information on industry issues.

There are about 550 registered NCJV valuers in Australia who operate their own retail outlets, work in a retail outlets, or act on a consultancy basis for jewellery stores covering 2000 jewellery stores around the country.
